Mission Participants

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the nation's largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, holds itself accountable for children in its program to succeed in school; avoid risky behaviors; and have greater confidence, better relationships and higher aspirations.  They carefully match volunteers in one-to-one long-term mentoring friendships with children of single-parent or low-income families or those where a parent is incarcerated or serving in the military.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is proven to help youth in areas linked to high school graduation, avoidance of juvenile delinquency and college or job readiness.

Research proves that children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters programs are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Big Brothers Big Sisters holds itself accountable for specific youth outcomes that focus on:

  • Educational achievement
  • Avoidance of risky behaviors (especially juvenile delinquency)
  • Higher self-esteem, confidence, and the ability to relate to others

How does Big Brothers Big Sisters’ one-to-one mentoring work?

Each match is unique. Getting together doesn’t require a special occasion or expensive activity—just a few hours every month with the Big and Little doing things they already enjoy. For example:

  • Playing catch
  • Reading books
  • Going to a museum
  • Providing advice and inspiration
